Embracing Nature-Based Solutions: A Path to Sustainable Water Management
Chris Gerrard, Head of Landscape at Anglian Water
Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer a sustainable and innovative approach to addressing environmental challenges by harnessing theinherent capabilities of natural processes and ecosystems. These solutions are increasingly recognised for their dual benefits:enhancing biodiversity and providing critical ecosystem services. By integrating natural elements into modern infrastructure, NbScontribute to water purification, flood mitigation, climate adaptation, and improved human well-being. As we face escalatingenvironmental and societal pressures, adopting NbS becomes not just beneficial but essential for creating resilient and sustainablecommunities.
In 2018, Anglian Water commissioned a purpose-built wetland to treat used water, ensuring it could be safely returned to theenvironment. This pioneering project, constructed by the Norfolk Rivers Trust—an environmental NGO—with the support of theEnvironment Agency, England’s water environment regulator, sparked our commitment to integrating nature-based solutions whereverfeasible.
Located in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk, this wetland serves as an extension of our Water Recycling Centre. Here, used water from ourcustomers undergoes natural treatment, further enhancing its quality before it is discharged into the river Ingol. The river Ingol is a rarechalk stream, one of only about 300 worldwide, highlighting the ecological significance of our efforts.
Having visited the wetland numerous times, often to guide visitors through its workings and development, I have witnessed firsthand theflourishing wildlife it supports. This wetland, now a miniature nature reserve, hosts a variety of plant species such as flag iris, marshmarigold, and purple loosestrife, alongside a diverse array of fauna including ducks, geese, various invertebrates, and even theendangered water vole. Although its primary function is water treatment, the wetland plays a vital role in local nature recovery, contributing significantly to the ecological health of this small corner of England.
The accessibility of the wetland exemplifies how NbS benefit people as well. They offer numerous advantages, including enhancementsto physical and mental health, flood risk reduction, noise abatement, educational opportunities, and more.
Anglian Water is dedicated to collaborating with others to substantially improve the ecological health of catchments across our region, placing NbS at the forefront of our strategy. These solutions not only support people and wildlife but also present cost-effective andlower-carbon alternatives, making them advantageous for our customers.
Despite their numerous benefits, NbS face certain challenges. Thus, we are excited about the growing global interest in NbS, particularlyat this year’s International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress. I look forward to sharing our experiences and gaininginsights from others through a series of NbS Workshops, and the UK Pavilion will prominently feature a nature-first theme.
See you in Toronto!
